Pinterest adds visual content to Google Chrome
Pinterest has developed a creative solution to the timeworn Google-and-searchbox greeting you get every time a new tab is opened in Google Chrome: its own content.
The self-described visual discovery tool announced Friday that it has developed the Pinterest Tab, a Google Chrome extension that will greet you “with a new and inspiring full-color Pin” every time a new tab is opened.
The photos will be clickable and pinnable.
“It’s an intelligent play by Pinterest to put quality content in such a high traffic place,” Chris Jaynes, Director of Product Management at Olapic, told me.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually work with brands to fill the page with quality user-generated content that is shoppable,” he added.
Pinterest Tab was developed at a company Makeathon, where employees spend 24 hours working on projects otherwise not part of their daily responsibilities, and it’s not without its drawbacks. The Next Web notes that it “disables the bookmarks bar from popping up in a new tab. That won’t be an issue if you’ve elected to always show the bookmarks bar, but it does throw a wrench in [the] workflow.”
On the whole, however, it’s sure to make for a more rewarding visual experience than the current option.
