Inside Olapic: A Conversation with Becky Dutta
Welcome to our latest Inside Olapic, our employee interview series where we talk to individual members of our global team to learn more about their role, hobbies, and life outside of work.
We’ve mentioned before that our core values here are: courage, collaboration, awareness, and performance, and we suspect you’ll find these qualities present in each of the OlaPeeps you “meet.”
Read on below to get to know an integral member of our Account management team: Becky Dutta.
Role: Director of Account Management, EMEA
Olapic Office: London
Hometown: Brighton, United Kingdom
Time at Olapic: 1.5 years
What do you like most about your current role?
It’s a combination of having a solid, incredibly smart team of Account Managers who I can really trust to deliver value to our customers. I also love working with some incredibly innovative brands who think outside the box with their Earned Content strategy.
What’s one superpower someone in your role or team must possess in order to succeed?
The power of foresight. Account Managers need to be able to predict trends, potential risks, future successes, opportunities and so much more.
Where do you see the future of #EarnedContent marketing going?
Apart from becoming a standard requirement for a successful and cost-effective digital marketing strategy, I predict that Earned Content is going straight into your local high street (main street) to help shoppers make informed decisions. Who wouldn’t want some ‘virtual assistance’ in creating that perfect outfit for your holiday party or in identifying the ideal furniture for your Edwardian property?
What is your favorite thing about the culture at Olapic?
We’re a tight team that is always willing to pitch in and help each other out. I don’t think I’ve ever worked for such a collaborative organisation! The endless supply of cake in the kitchen is a bonus too…
What brands are doing a great job of using UGC?
We work with a lot of really successful brands, on that has stood out most recently to me is Monki, a Swedish fashion retailer. From day one they implemented an excellent Earned Content strategy, leveraging all marketing channels to promote their #monkistyle campaign and delivered a best-in-class e-commerce integration. Since then the brand has leveraged its in-store staff (with the hashtag #TeamMonki) to really participate in generating content for its newer collections. Through this Monki has been able to increasingly inspire customers and encourage them to share their own #monkistyle. Take a look at some of their Earned Content from around the world in this great video challenging prejudice.
Why do brands succeed at #EarnedContent marketing?
Brands succeed when they put their customers at the heart of their business and therefore at the heart of their overall digital marketing strategy. Brands that don’t limit their use of UGC to their e-commerce strategy, but distribute these assets across other channels such as advertising, social channels, email marketing, and even in-store are the ones that find holistic success.
What Emoji best describes you?
As a sarcastic Brit who hates to offend (confusing I know!) I always use the winky-face emoji to lighten the mood ?
This is best followed up with a rosy-cheeked smiley face of course! ☺️
If you won the lottery, what would you do?
Commission more Harry Potter books!
Favorite throwback song?
Landslide of Love by Transvision Vamp. The first vinyl I ever owned!
What’s your favorite quote?
‘Do not accept badly made cups of tea. Do not surround yourself with people who make them. They don’t care about you.’ – a very smart individual
What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
I lost both parts of my bikini at the same time in a spa pool, recently. I wasn’t sure which item to salvage first. My husband couldn’t stop laughing!
If you are stranded on an island and could only bring 3 things what would you bring?
Bear Grylls and my favourite book, Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts. I’ll let Bear pick the third ;-
What’re you watching most at the moment?
Once a year Australian Masterchef takes over my life. It runs for almost three months, 5 nights a week. As my husband is not a fan, I tend to binge watch when he is working weekend shifts. He would probably be more supportive if I could actually cook☺️
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love spending time with my 3 year old Puggle, Dobby, and my crazy husband. They are studying hard in preparation for our next addition to the Dutta family.
What was the last book you read?
I’m currently reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Not my usual genre, but it’s surprisingly addictive!
Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I love travelling and elephants so I combine the two where possible. Here’s a lovely family of African Elephants that I met on my trip to South Africa earlier this year.
