Inside Olapic: A Conversation with Sebas Alvarez
Welcome to our second Inside Olapic interview, the newest series we are sharing bi-weekly to showcase the various individuals, disciplines, & global regions that make up our wonderful organization. At Olapic, we pride ourselves on our leading Earned Content platform, but even more than that, we pride ourselves on the people that help us do what we need to do every day to succeed in our industry.
As we mentioned in our first interview, we think you’ll find a few traits in common across all of our Olapic teams: Courage, collaboration, awareness, and performance.
Without further adieu, meet one of the O.G. members of the Olapic team: Sebastian Matias Alvarez Alvarez (yes his parents both had the same last name), better known as Sebas.
Role: VP of Engineering & Director of Olapic Argentina
Olapic Office: Córdoba, Argentina
Hometown: Neuquén, Patagonia Argentina
Time at Olapic: 5 years and counting
(For all of us non-engineers) Explain what you do in a way that a 10-year-old could understand.
I make sure that Olapic does everything that we say we can do. The fun part of being a Software Engineer is that you get to create new things out of ‘almost’ thin air. I encourage our team to move as fast and far as their imagination takes them.
What is your favorite thing about your specific role?
I get to work with people several orders of magnitude smarter than me and I help them build something that is bigger than all of us combined.
What’s one “superpower” (or skill) someone in your role or team must possess in order to succeed?
Being able to translate Engineering to non-technical people. This sounds easy but it is very hard, and as Einstein said, “You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother.” As an engineer, if you can’t work with people who do not understand what you do, it will be very difficult for you to move forward. (Although, I can’t say my grandmother understands what I do)
What is your favorite thing about the culture at Olapic?
The fact that anything you do, no matter what, will impact a lot of people almost immediately. It always feel like what we do matters.
Now, the fun part…
What Emoji best describes you and why?
? : Because I just went through all my chats, and that is apparently the emoji I use the most. It seems that I tend to agree a lot?
Life motto/slogan or favorite quote?
“Esto no es para cagones” – Translation: This is not for sissies.
It is a motto that came from the Engineering team down in Argentina when we started Olapic. I think it best describes the courage that you need to have to be in a startup that is growing at the speed that Olapic is growing.
What’re you watching most at the moment?
Re-watching Gilmore Girls with my girlfriend. I’m a sucker for romantic comedies and my girlfriend never watched, so we had to.
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
Some bird that flies a lot. I just googled Arctic Terns and learned that they fly 40,000 kilometers. I think I would choose that because I can’t think of a thing that I like more than traveling. (Maybe, food. I like food a lot… but that doesn’t have anything to do with animals)
What does an ideal weekend look like to you?
Pancakes and coffee for breakfast, somewhere outside in nature. Then, homemade pasta for lunch. And of course, asado for dinner with (several) friends. Repeat on Sunday. So… basically, eating. I like eating.
Advice for people who want to work at Olapic?
Prepare to work hard with a lot of people that are intelligent and have many different areas of expertise (but still know how to have fun!). And be careful, because your English will get worse.
What’s your favorite Instagram account to follow & why?
Can it be two?
The first is @marutaro because I love Japan, I love dogs, and those videos are cute as hell.
The second is @yogurt_thepirate because I can’t think of a dog that would make my day more than this one.
? Whatever you are be a good one.? Happy friday guys!A photo posted by Yogurt The Pirate Dog (@yogurt_thepirate) on
